Marathos was a Phoenician coastal city on the Syrian littoral that maintained remarkable autonomy under Seleucid rule, issuing its own dated civic bronze series using a local era beginning in 259 BC. This piece falls in year 38 or 39 of that reckoning — a period when Antiochus III had not yet consolidated control over the Phoenician coast, leaving cities like Marathos considerable room to operate independently.
