Mopsos was a small civic mint in Cilicia, the city claiming descent from the mythological seer Mopsus — a founding legend shared awkwardly with several neighboring towns, each asserting the same hero. The city's bronze coinage spans the Seleucid and early Roman imperial periods, issued under varying degrees of autonomy depending on who held Cilicia at the time. SNG France 1951 places this piece within a well-documented but sparsely populated series; the French national collection remains one of the primary reference points for Cilician civic bronzes precisely because systematic excavation of the region lagged well behind its numismatic output.
