Reverse description The youthful figure of Hermias, local hero and eponymous founder of Iasos, depicted nude and swimming to the right astride a dolphin. The figure leans forward dynamically, clinging to the dolphin's body, with arms extended and legs trailing, conveying vigorous movement through the waves. The Greek ethnic legend ΙΑΣΕΩΝ is inscribed in the lower field beneath the principal device, identifying the issuing city. The composition is well-centered within the round flan, with the dolphin rendered in fine relief.

Additional information

Iasos was a Carian coastal city whose fortunes swung dramatically depending on which regional power held sway — Macedonian, Ptolemaic, and Seleucid control all passed through within the span this issue covers. The city was famously sacked by Macedonian troops under Philip V around 201 BC, an event Polybius records with particular disgust, noting the soldiers carried off the population into slavery. Bronze civic issues from Iasos in this period reflect intermittent autonomy rather than continuous independent authority.
