Łańcut Castle survived World War II largely intact thanks to a calculated act of self-preservation: in 1944, as Soviet forces advanced, the castle's last private owner Alfred Potocki organized the removal of hundreds of artworks and furnishings westward into Austria. He never returned to Poland. The estate was nationalized immediately after the war and converted into a museum — one of the few Polish aristocratic seats to survive the century with its interiors substantially complete.
This issue belongs to the broader Polish commemorative series produced during the post-communist monetary transition, before the 1995 redenomination replaced 10,000 old złotych with a single new złoty.
