Trial strikes from Mennica Polska in the early 1990s occupy an odd category — produced as internal die proofs and presentation pieces during a period when the Polish mint was simultaneously managing the tail end of Communist-era production schedules and retooling for a post-reform currency system. The 1994 zloty series sat at the very end of the old denomination structure, rendered obsolete the following year when redenomination replaced 10,000 old złotych with a single new złoty.
Sigismund I ruled Poland from 1506 to 1548 and oversaw the monetary reform of 1526 that unified coinage across the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. That this trial was struck in nickel rather than a precious metal reflects its purely technical, non-circulating purpose.
