The 20,000 Yuan gold kilo-plus issues from the People's Bank of China represent the apex of China's lunar bullion program, which launched in 1981 and became the first government-backed gold lunar series globally. The 2015 Goat year falls in the third 12-year cycle of that program. At 2 kilograms, this piece was struck in extremely limited quantities — production numbers for the largest denominations in this series routinely fall below a few hundred pieces worldwide, with distribution handled almost exclusively through the China Gold Coin Corporation.
