Additional information

Hangeul was created under the direct sponsorship of King Sejong the Great and promulgated in 1446 under the name Hunminjeongeum — "the correct sounds for the instruction of the people." The 560th anniversary commemorated here falls in 2006, counting from that promulgation date. Sejong faced considerable resistance from the scholar class, who regarded Classical Chinese as the only legitimate written medium and saw a vernacular script as a threat to their cultural authority.

Korea is unusual in knowing precisely who invented its writing system and when — a rarity in the history of scripts worldwide.
