| Beschrijving voorzijde | A stylized rearing horse rendered in incuse relief occupies the upper half of the field, its mirror image reflected below a horizontal dividing line bisecting the coin, creating a striking symmetrical composition. The legend REPUBLIKA SLOVENIJA arcs along the upper left periphery, while the date 2002 appears to the upper right. The denomination 20000 tolarjev curves along the lower right rim, also mirrored in the reflected portion of the design. The overall design is executed in a bold, modern graphic style with polished fields contrasting against the matte device. |

The 2002 Chess Olympiad was held in Bled, Slovenia — a return to a venue that had hosted the event once before, in 1931, when Alekhine dominated in what is still considered one of the greatest individual Olympiad performances in history. Slovenia's selection as host was a point of national pride for a country barely a decade into independence, and the Bank of Slovenia's commemorative program around the event was correspondingly ambitious, with this gold piece sitting at the top of a tiered issue.
Bled's 1931 tournament drew 27 nations; the 2002 edition drew 136.
