Issued to mark twenty years since Kazakhstan abandoned the Soviet ruble in November 1993 and introduced the tenge — a transition executed with unusual speed, the entire changeover completed in a single week. The 20,000 denomination was the highest face value in Kazakhstani circulation at the time of issue, making this commemorative a functional note, not merely a collector piece.
The hybrid substrate, combining paper and polymer layers, was still uncommon in Central Asian issues in 2013. Giesecke & Devrient had supplied Kazakhstani printing needs from early in the currency's history, and this note continues that relationship.
