| 裏面の説明 | The right half of the reverse carries an intaglio classroom vignette captioned 'KEGIATAN BELAJAR', rendered in green line engraving over a pale yellow guilloche underprint, showing a teacher standing before students at desks. The large denomination numeral '20000' appears in dark brown at lower right, with a corresponding green numeral running vertically along the left margin; the serial number is printed twice — once in black and once in red — flanking a circular watermark window in the left-centre field. |

This note entered circulation during one of the most economically violent periods in modern Indonesian history. The rupiah lost roughly 80% of its value against the dollar between mid-1997 and early 1998, and the subsequent fall of Suharto in May 1998 meant this denomination arrived into a country where prices were being reprinted daily. The 20,000 Rp note was not a high-value note by the time it reached most Indonesians' hands.
Engraved by Mujirun, one of the few named Indonesian intaglio engravers working at Perum Peruri during this period. The OVI patch — optically variable ink shifting between colors at different viewing angles — was an addition reflecting the IMF-era pressure on Bank Indonesia to harden its currency against the counterfeit operations that had proliferated during the crisis years.
