Brazil's 20,000 réis gold piece bridged the end of the Empire and the early decades of the Republic — the same denomination, an unbroken series, across one of the most turbulent political transitions in South American history. The monarchy fell in November 1889 without a single shot fired, and the mint continued striking gold with barely a pause.
The series ran until 1922, by which point chronic currency instability and Brazil's reliance on coffee export revenues had made gold coinage increasingly ceremonial. Most late-date examples saw little commercial circulation.
