Colombia's 20,000 peso coin entered circulation as part of a broader monetary reform aimed at reducing the country's dependence on high-denomination banknotes, which had become targets for counterfeiting and were costly to replace. The Banco de la República had resisted coining at this face value for decades, making this one of the highest-denomination circulation coins in Colombian history at the time of its issue.
