| 表面の説明 | The stylized national arms of Guinea-Bissau occupy the central field, depicting a black five-pointed star above two crossed rifles superimposed on an open scallop shell, all flanked by two symmetrical sprays of leaves. A ribbon below bears the national motto in three segments reading UNIDADE, LUTA, and PROGRESSO. The circular legend REPÚBLICA DA GUINÉ-BISSAU arcs along the upper periphery in Latin characters, while the denomination 20 000 PESOS is inscribed along the lower periphery. |

Guinea-Bissau's independence from Portugal was won in 1974 under the PAIGC, but the new state's politics turned violent quickly. Luís Cabral — brother of founding revolutionary Amílcar Cabral — served as the country's first president until November 1980, when a military coup led by João Bernardo Vieira removed him from power. The coup came just four years after independence, making the "10th Anniversary" framing of this issue something of a politically loaded exercise: the government being commemorated had already been overthrown for nearly a decade by the time this coin was struck.
