The Lady of Elche is a polychrome stone bust discovered in 1897 at L'Alcúdia near Elche, Valencia, and is one of the most debated artifacts in Iberian archaeology — scholars still disagree on whether she is a funerary urn, a votive offering, or a portrait of a priestess, and on whether she dates to the 4th or 5th century BC. France acquired the piece almost immediately after its discovery, and it sat in the Louvre until 1941, when Franco's government negotiated its repatriation as part of wartime diplomacy with Vichy France.
