Myanmar's highest-denomination note at time of issue, the 20,000 Kyat was introduced as the country's economy deteriorated sharply following the February 2021 military coup. The kyat lost roughly half its value against the dollar within the first year of junta rule, driven by capital flight, banking sector paralysis, and collapse in foreign investment. A note of this face value becoming necessary is itself a measure of that damage.
The TBB catalogue reference places this firmly within the post-coup Central Bank series, whose independence from the military government is widely considered nominal at best.
