That Luang, the great stupa in Vientiane, was originally built in the mid-16th century under King Setthathirath, who relocated the Lao capital from Luang Prabang to Vientiane around 1560 — placing the 450th anniversary squarely in 2010. The stupa had been largely destroyed and rebuilt multiple times, most devastatingly by Siamese forces in 1828, making it as much a symbol of national reconstruction as of original foundation.
Gold issues from the Bank of the Lao PDR in this weight class were struck primarily for collector export rather than domestic circulation.
