Said Mohamed Cheikh served as president of the Comoro Islands' government council from 1962 until his death in 1970, making this 1976 posthumous issue something of an anomaly — struck six years after the subject died, during the chaotic transitional period following the unilateral declaration of independence in 1975. The Comoros issued several gold pieces in the mid-1970s clearly aimed at collector and investor markets rather than domestic circulation, a common strategy among newly independent small-nation states scrambling for foreign currency revenue.
