The timing aligned the young republic's commemorative program with Apollo 11, a common strategy among smaller francophone African states looking to generate hard currency through collector sales rather than domestic circulation — these coins were never intended to pass through Gabonese hands.
At 70 grams of .900 gold, it is an unusually heavy issue for the type, placing it well above most contemporary African commemoratives in raw metal content.
