The Szózat — Hungary's second national anthem, written by Mihály Vörösmarty in 1836 — sat without an official melody for over two decades until Ferenc Erkel won a public composition competition in 1844. Erkel is better known as the father of Hungarian opera and composer of the actual national anthem, the Himnusz, which makes him uniquely responsible for both of the nation's defining patriotic songs. The 2018 issue marks the 175th anniversary of that 1843 competition.
