Bergbau-AG Lothringen was one of the Ruhr's significant hard coal producers, operating out of Gerthe near Bochum. Like hundreds of German industrial firms, it issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank simply could not supply enough physical currency to meet payroll demands. These mine-issued notes were often redeemable only at company facilities, effectively tying workers' wages to the issuer.
The 20-million Mark denomination places this squarely in the August–September 1923 window, before denominations climbed into the billions. By October, this figure wouldn't have covered a loaf of bread.
