Obverse description Pink-toned Notgeld issued on a fine guilloche underprint ground, with the denomination '20 000 000' printed in bold black numerals at both upper corners below a decorative border frame. The central text in Fraktur blackletter script reads 'Zwanzig Millionen Mark' in large display type, surmounted by 'Gutschein über' and followed by the issuing authority 'des Landkreises Greiz.' A circular watermark-style vignette of the district coat of arms occupies the centre, around which the redemption guarantee clause and issue date 'Greiz, am 3. Oktober 1923' are printed. Two manuscript signatures appear at the foot above the serial prefix 'C' and serial number, with signatory titles 'Der Vorsitzende des Kreisrats' and 'Der Thüringische Kreisdirektor.' A vertical right-hand stub carries an anti-counterfeiting warning legend in small Fraktur type.

Landkreis Greiz was one of hundreds of German district authorities forced into emergency currency production during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsmark collapsed so rapidly that local governments printed their own Notgeld simply to make change and pay wages. By the time denominations in the tens of millions became necessary — mid-1923 — the printing cycle had compressed to days, with values obsolete almost as soon as ink dried.

District-level issues like this one were typically printed by local commercial printers on whatever stock was available, which is why paper quality and impression fidelity vary so dramatically even within the same series. The twenty-million-mark denomination places this note in the acute phase of the collapse, before the introduction of the Rentenmark in November 1923 rendered all such issues void.
