| Obverse description | The obverse is divided into two distinct vertical panels: a left-hand green panel bearing the denomination '20 000 000 MARK' printed vertically in white letterpress on a guilloche-patterned ground, and a larger right-hand panel with an orange and pink underprint enclosed within an elaborate scalloped and rosette guilloche border. The central text panel carries the denomination 'Zwanzig Millionen Mark' in bold Gothic Fraktur script at the top, followed by the serial number field, a multi-line redemption text in German, the issuing authority, the date 'TRIER, den 14. Regierungsbezirk Trier und Provinz Birkenfeld was among the hundreds of regional German authorities that resorted to emergency currency — Notgeld — as hyperinflation made Reichsbank supply chronically inadequate. By mid-1923, denominations were climbing so fast that notes printed in July were obsolete by August. The 20,000,000 Mark value places this squarely in the late summer phase, when the mark was losing purchasing power faster than any press could keep up.
Schaar & Dathe, a Trier-based printing firm, handled much of the local notgeld output for this district rather than outsourcing to larger national printers — which was common in the Rhineland, where French occupation of the Ruhr had further complicated access to Frankfurt and Berlin suppliers.
