Beuel was an independent municipality on the right bank of the Rhine, directly opposite Bonn, and not yet incorporated into it — that merger wouldn't come until 1969. Like hundreds of German local authorities in the summer and autumn of 1923, Beuel issued its own emergency currency (Notgeld) to cover payroll and small transactions as hyperinflation made Reichsbank notes functionally useless almost as soon as they were distributed. A 20-million-Mark denomination tells you exactly where in that collapse this note sits: mid-1923, after the July price surge but before the truly astronomical figures of October and November.
