Beşiktaş Jimnastik Kulübü — the full legal name of the Istanbul club better known for football — was founded in 1903, making 2003 its centennial year. Turkey's State Mint issued a series of commemorative silver coins marking the centenaries of several major Turkish sports clubs that year, a project that coincided with a period of aggressive monetary denomination reform: the lira was so debased by this point that the face value of 20,000,000 lira represented roughly twelve US dollars at the time of issue.
The following year, Turkey redenominated entirely, replacing 1,000,000 old lira with a single New Turkish Lira — making this one of the last coin series issued under the old denomination structure.
