By 2001, Turkish inflation had been running at triple-digit annual rates for most of two decades, forcing the central bank to issue denominations that would have been unthinkable in 1970. The 20,000,000 Lira note is a direct artifact of that spiral — a single banknote worth less than fifteen US dollars at issue. The print run of just over 12 million is modest by Turkish standards of the period, likely reflecting the note's brief useful life before still-larger denominations rendered it inconvenient for everyday transactions.
The redenomination came in 2005, when six zeroes were stripped and the Yeni Türk Lirası replaced the old currency at 1,000,000:1.
