The Reichsbahndirektionen — regional railway directorates — became emergency currency issuers during the hyperinflation peak of 1923 because the Reichsbank simply could not print and distribute notes fast enough to keep pace with daily price collapses. Cassel's directorate was one of several that issued scrip denominated in the billions and trillions of Marks to pay railway workers whose wages were being renegotiated almost weekly.
Weber & Weidemeyer were a local Cassel firm, pressed into service precisely because proximity mattered — shipping printed currency from distant printers introduced delays that rendered denominations obsolete before the notes even arrived.
