Beschrijving voorzijde The original 1918 Stadt Marburg 10 Mark Notgeld note, printed in green and black, with a central letterpress vignette of the Marburg townscape framed by the large bold numeral '10' and the denomination 'ZEHN MARK' at the foot; artist credits 'HERMANN' and 'KATELHÖN' appear in small type at the lower margins. A diagonal red overprint across the centre revalues the note to '20 - Zwanzig - Milliarden Mark', accompanied by additional overprinted text specifying the new validity period and the issuance date of 25 October 1923. The serial number and magistrate signatures appear within the lower panel of the original note.

Opmerkingen

Marburg's municipal administration was one of hundreds of German local authorities forced to issue their own emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank simply could not produce denominations large enough fast enough. The overprint method — stamping an astronomical new face value onto existing low-denomination stock — was the fastest available solution, and this note is a direct artifact of that logistical desperation. By the time 20-billion-mark notes were circulating, a single loaf of bread in many German cities cost several times that figure.

The underlying 10 Mark base note was already obsolete the moment the ink dried.
