2 Zlotys Warsaw Ghetto Uprising

Issued on the 65th anniversary of the April 1943 uprising, this coin commemorates the organized armed resistance mounted by Jewish fighters against the German SS deportation operation — an action that lasted nearly a month before the ghetto was systematically burned and demolished. The uprising was coordinated primarily by the Żydowska Organizacja Bojowa, the Jewish Combat Organization, with fewer than 750 fighters holding out against thousands of Waffen-SS troops and police auxiliaries.

Nordic gold, the aluminum-bronze alloy used for Polish circulation commemoratives of this type, was adopted by NBP partly to deter counterfeiting of the popular collector-circulation series.
