Poland co-hosted UEFA Euro 2012 with Ukraine — the first time the tournament was held in Eastern Europe. The decision, awarded in 2007, was deeply controversial given both nations' infrastructure deficits at the time, and Poland spent heavily on stadium construction, motorway expansion, and rail upgrades to meet UEFA's requirements. Warsaw's National Stadium was built from scratch on the site of the demolished Legia Warsaw ground specifically for the tournament.
