This piece is one of hundreds of Nordic gold collector zlotys issued by NBP since the late 1990s — a program so prolific it became something of a standing joke among Polish dealers. The Police Anniversary commemorated here marks the 85th anniversary of the establishment of the Polish State Police in 1919, reconstituted after over a century of partitioned Poland having no national law enforcement of its own.
The force was dissolved by German occupiers in 1939, its officers largely murdered at Katyń alongside military and civilian prisoners.
