Poland's Nordic Gold circulation commemorative series, launched in 1994, was designed explicitly to circulate — an unusual ambition for a commemorative program. The butterfly issues proved popular enough that many were pulled from circulation almost immediately by collectors, meaning surviving circulated examples are genuinely scarce despite relatively high mintages.
The swallowtail (*Papilio machaon*) was a deliberate choice: once common across Polish meadows, its populations had declined sharply by 2001 due to agricultural intensification, giving the coin a quiet conservation subtext that was never officially advertised.
