Konin's selection for this Nordic Gold series entry reflects the city's administrative promotion to provincial capital status in 1975, a designation it lost again in 1999 when Poland reorganized its voivodeships from 49 units back down to 16. The coin effectively commemorates a status the city no longer held by the time it was struck.
