Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, a Franciscan architectural complex and pilgrimage site in Lesser Poland, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999 — one of only a handful of Polish sites to receive that designation. The town's calvary paths, laid out from 1600 onward by Mikołaj Zebrzydowski, were designed as a topographic imitation of Jerusalem. This coin is part of NBP's long-running Nordic gold series commemorating Polish cities and regions, which began in 2004 and eventually ran to well over one hundred distinct types, making completionist collecting a genuine logistical challenge.
