| 裏面の説明 | The reverse presents a finely detailed portrait bust of Jan Matejko, the renowned Polish historical painter (1838–1893), depicted in three-quarter profile facing left, rendered in a naturalistic style befitting his academic artistic legacy. Beside him appears the figure of Stańczyk, the melancholic court jester protagonist of one of Matejko's most celebrated canvases, symbolizing Poland's historical consciousness. The legend 'JAN MATEJKO' arcs along the upper rim, with his life dates '1838–1893' inscribed below in the field. |

Jan Matejko, Poland's most celebrated historical painter, died in 1893, but his reputation as a near-official visual chronicler of Polish nationhood only deepened through the 20th century. The NBP has drawn heavily on his image for collector coinage — this 2002 issue appeared as part of a long-running Nordic gold series honoring figures central to Polish cultural identity. Nordic gold, the same aluminum-bronze alloy used in euro-denomination coins across the EU, was adopted by the mint specifically for this commemorative program rather than circulation use.
