Arctowski and Dobrowolski were both scientists on the Belgica expedition of 1897–99 — the first to winter over in Antarctica, albeit unintentionally, after pack ice trapped the ship for thirteen months. The experience broke several crew members psychologically; Dobrowolski's meticulous meteorological records from that ordeal became foundational texts in polar climatology.
This coin was part of NBP's ongoing Nordic gold series commemorating Polish scientists, issued the same year Poland ratified its renewed Antarctic Treaty obligations.
