The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity — known in Poland as Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy, or WOŚP — was founded by Jerzy Owsiak in 1993 and rapidly became the largest charity fundraising event in Polish history, mobilizing tens of thousands of volunteers each January. The NBP issued this Nordic gold circulating commemorative to mark the organization's tenth anniversary campaign. Nordic gold, the same manganese-brass alloy used across EU countries for their €0.10–€0.50 coins, was chosen specifically for the Polish Y-series bimetallic commemoratives of this period to keep production costs aligned with face value.
