The Cistercian abbey at Jędrzejów, founded in 1140, holds the distinction of being the oldest Cistercian monastery in Poland. It survived the Partitions, two World Wars, and Soviet-era nationalization — the monks were expelled by communist authorities in 1950 and not permitted to return until 1989. This coin was issued as part of NBP's long-running Nordic gold series commemorating historic Polish monuments, a program that generated dozens of types across the 2000s and has become one of the more systematically collected modern Polish series.
