John Paul II was canonised on 27 April 2014 alongside John XXIII — an unusual dual ceremony that Pope Francis conducted without the customary second verified miracle being required for John XXIII, a rare relaxation of the formal process. The date itself was chosen deliberately: Divine Mercy Sunday, a feast that Karol Wojtyła had himself instituted for the universal Church in 2000, making the canonisation date a pointed act of papal continuity.
