Additional information

The First Cadre Company — a 144-man riflemen's unit under Józef Piłsudski — marched out of Kraków on August 6, 1914, the day after Austria-Hungary declared war on Russia. Piłsudski gambled that the moment had arrived to ignite a Polish uprising against the partitioning powers. It didn't materialize as he'd hoped, but the march became foundational mythology for the Second Polish Republic, and August 6th was later observed as a state holiday. This coin marks the 95th anniversary of that departure.
