The 1944 Polish zloty series, printed by Goznak in Moscow, was produced under the authority of the Soviet-backed Polish Committee of National Liberation — the PKWN — which declared itself in Lublin in July 1944 as the Red Army pushed west through occupied Poland. These notes preceded any legitimate postwar Polish government by months and were deliberately designed to give the PKWN the appearance of administrative sovereignty before one had actually been established.
Goznak had printed Soviet state securities and currency since the tsarist period; contracting them for Polish notes was a political statement as much as a logistical one. The series entered circulation in liberated territories before the war even ended.
