The ZiG — short for Zimbabwe Gold — was introduced in April 2024 as Zimbabwe's sixth attempt at a stable currency since 2008, this time theoretically backed by gold reserves and foreign currency held by the Reserve Bank. The 2 ZiG sits at the lower end of a denomination range that was almost immediately tested: within months of launch, the ZiG was devalued by roughly 44 percent in a single official adjustment as the parallel market rate diverged sharply from the official peg.
Paper composition for a 2024 issue is worth noting — most contemporary African central bank notes of this period use polymer or hybrid substrates. Zimbabwe's return to paper here reflects procurement constraints rather than preference.
