António Manoel de Vilhena served as Grand Master from 1722 to 1736, a period during which the Order was actively fortifying Malta against Ottoman naval pressure. The zecchino denomination was the Order's prestige gold issue, struck in direct imitation of the Venetian ducat — same fineness, comparable weight — a deliberate choice that ensured acceptance in Mediterranean trade circuits where Venetian gold had circulated for centuries.
Fr#27 is among the scarcer Vilhena gold pieces. The 1723–24 date range suggests a short emission window rather than continuous production.
