Additional information

Alvise Mocenigo I served as Doge during one of Venice's most consequential military episodes: the Ottoman assault on Cyprus, culminating in the fall of Famagusta in August 1571 and the formation of the Holy League that defeated the Ottoman fleet at Lepanto that October. The Venetian treasury was under extraordinary strain financing both the war and its diplomatic obligations to its Spanish and papal allies.

The double zecchino denomination was struck for prestige commerce and large-denomination settlement rather than everyday exchange. Venice's near-.999 fine gold standard was trusted across Mediterranean markets precisely because the Republic enforced it with a consistency most contemporary mints did not match.
