North Korea's foreign-currency commemorative program, active since the 1970s, was never intended for domestic circulation — these pieces were struck expressly for sale to overseas collectors and generated hard currency for a state perpetually short of it. By 2002, the program had expanded into dozens of annual wildlife-themed issues, many sharing dies or planchets with coins nominally attributed to different years.
KM#892 is one of several fauna-themed pieces from this period where collector demand has consistently outpaced whatever documentation the DPCB made available to catalog compilers.
