Pedro II ruled as Prince Regent from 1668 before formally ascending following the death of Afonso VI in 1683 — the same year this series begins. Afonso had been forcibly deposed by Pedro himself, confined first to the Azores and then to Sintra, and the coinage issued under Pedro's regency and early reign reflects the deliberate construction of a new royal identity. The "Prince crown" designation on pieces from this period distinguishes them from later issues struck after Pedro assumed the full royal title in 1683.
The four Gomes varieties across this short window suggest active die production at Lisbon despite the modest nominal value.
