The Vereinsthaler was a product of the Dresden Mint Convention of 1838, which committed the German states to a shared silver standard — but Bavaria and several southern states held out for the double-thaler weight, producing these heavier 2-Vereinsthaler pieces alongside the single coins. Maximilian II's reign was brief, running only from 1848 to 1864, and the 1859–1860 window for this type is narrower still.
Production ceased as Prussian commercial dominance increasingly rendered the southern heavy-silver denominations redundant. The Davenport reference places this squarely in the German Taler series, third volume.
