Nāṣer al-Dīn Shāh visited the Tehran Mint in 1891, and this piece was struck specifically to commemorate that occasion — a practice with deep roots in Qajar court ceremonial, where mint visits were treated as affairs of state worth memorializing in gold. The timing is historically loaded: 1891 was the year the Shāh granted a sweeping tobacco concession to the British Imperial Tobacco Corporation, triggering a nationwide boycott fatwa from Mīrzā Ḥasan Shīrāzī that forced him to cancel it within months.
Mintage was intentionally limited, as with all Qajar commemorative strikes of this type. Most examples known today show minimal wear, consistent with presentation rather than circulation.
