Additional information

Following the death of Cardinal-King Henrique in 1580, Philip II of Spain pressed his dynastic claim over Portugal through both diplomacy and force, defeating António, Prior of Crato — the last serious Portuguese claimant — at the Battle of Alcântara. António fled, briefly held the Azores, and struck coinage there in defiance of the new Iberian Union. This piece carries the countermark applied under his authority, punched over existing tostão coinage of previous reigns to assert legitimacy and fund a resistance that ultimately collapsed when Spanish forces took the Azores in 1583.
