Slovenia struck this piece under the authority of the Bank of Slovenia just one year before the country joined the European Union in 2004 — making it among the final silver issues produced before the tolar's eventual replacement by the euro in 2007. The tolar itself had only existed since 1991, when Slovenia broke from Yugoslavia and established its own currency within days of declaring independence.
