Slovenia introduced its own currency in October 1991, just months after declaring independence from Yugoslavia — one of the fastest monetary transitions of any post-communist state. The tolar was pegged to the Deutsche Mark through much of its circulation life, a deliberate anchor chosen to signal fiscal discipline to Western institutions during accession negotiations. This denomination ran continuously until Slovenia adopted the euro in January 2007, at which point the entire tolar series was retired after barely fifteen years in circulation.
